Wood Finishes

Last week we started the first chapter of our ultimate guide to wooden furniture, speaking about wood types. Today we continue telling you more about the kinds of wood finishes. As we have pointed out in the high trends for 2018, wood is one of the highlights for the home decor and one cannot miss it, rearranging any room from bedroom to kitchen and dining room. Before buying furniture and knowing how to take care of this kind, we recommend to discover more on the material (type of wood) it is made of, and get to know more about the kinds of finishes. So, here we go!

The popular decorative technique is undoubtedly inlaying. It is commonly used to create a furniture piece with a flush and flat surface. Inlaying means basically inserting contrasting materials into depressions in a major furniture piece. Usually materials used for contrast are another woods or metal, ivory. Often observed in accent tables and jewelry boxes.

A protective and sleek-style finish for woods is lacquer. Due to the layers applied it may have many sheen levels from matte-finished to high-gloss. It’s applied in many thin coats.

Whitewashing creates a white effect on wood. The look is achieved by applying bleach or white paint to the wood. Through this kind of technique, the furniture is given a rustic, weathered appearance.

And, by the way, as to the painting, wood can be painted any color. It gives the personal look and is often used for creating country, cottage or coastal-style furniture.

Without doubt, adding a piece of wood furniture to the home ambience will completely change its look and feel. Moreover, it is undeniably a staple material in furniture manufacturing, despite the industrial revolutions in history. Due to its extremely resilient features, it still requires very little maintenance, and is valued for the natural look.

Trends of the Coming 2018 Year

2018 is just around the corner, few days and 2017 is long gone. FurnitureCart team is ready to guide you into the trends of the coming year and make a forecast on the future interior decor that will be worth admiring. So, make yourself comfortable because we are taking you forward to the future!

The New Year is coming really soon, so undoubtedly, it’s the best time to get the old out and be in with the new. The same logic applies for many things including furniture rearrangement. Whether bedroom or living room, dining room or outdoor furniture, it still needs to have it’s own new zest. What is on trend in the coming new year? It is still about the comfort, even extra one, it is about nostalgia and emeralds, minimalism and nature, but let’s talk about it step by step.

Comfort Zone. The coming year comes with the sign of even bigger and brighter comfort in furniture. Don’t keep the sectionals and chairs in frames, just let it go and make it as soft and cosy as you can. Boxy is gone, curvy comes to the stage. Designers call it «cocoonection», so join the club.

Simplicity First. Comfort also means simplicity of design and a tasteful minimalism in furniture that wraps to invite reflection and meditation. Soft, giving sofas and enveloping chairs are upholstered in heavier fabrics, which absorb sound.

Emerald Isle. It’s not about the gemstones and Ireland, but on-trend furniture of 2018 will get something from both – the color. If 2017 was in the pink, 2018 is with emerald, going deeper in greenery. Though, do not rush to push pink out of the stage, pale “millennial pink” still holding positions strong.

Mother Nature. As we have mentioned above, greenery will be top color in all the shades. Moreover, the nature is carrying the palm the next year. Lush gardens, jungle motifs, nature patterns bring the stylish homes to full Edenic glory. Don’t forget about the stones and natural wood, it will give the brand new touch of an indoor idyll.

Rewind It! Do you feel nostalgic sometimes? We do also! The same do the designers, proving that the next year will still keep the roots in mind and take the best retro trends for the 2018 new home. Taking it from the past and rethinking the design in tune with the times – that is what makes it still look like familiar, but fresh at the same time.

Our brief summary brought you forward into the coming year, and we hope it was exciting to take a quick glance before the bigger journey into 2018. Enjoy your holidays and stay inspired with FurnitureCart!

How to Arrange Furniture in Your Living Room

The space size does not matter, if you have the furniture arranged right in your living room – you will enjoy it to the full extent. Just use few of our quick advice and make your living room truly cool!

When arranging furniture, leave room for traffic and the ‘entryway’ free. Make several seating islands (landing spaces). If you have a fireplace in your room – place cosy sofa and a pair of chairs facing each other. Add end tables for visual balance and a touch of functionality. Facing chairs and sofa towards each other are good also because it does encourage conversation. Our tip: place seating no more than 8 feet apart!

Place the seating so it takes advantage of the view your room has to offer. It might be TV or spacious window. Or you might like to create your own focal point by placing the wallart or making photo wall, or even placing console, bookshelves or etagere with your favorite objects. Another useful tip: It is better to place the television so the screen faces away from the sunlight.

Coffee table in between the seating island is a must. Frame the space with cabinets for storage, placed around the perimeter of your room, along the walls. If the space is shrunk, use round tables between chairs and a couch. The curves of the round tables are better for moving around them without sacrificing the territory invaded and for the safe navigation around.

Family and living rooms are usually considered to be the storage hub. Keep it organized if it’s your case as well. Here come entertainment walls and media consoles with storage for rescue.

Living room should have enough of light to be beloved spot. Let the windows provide enough sunlight into your room. For the evening cosiness use the lighting: chandeliers, sconces, and lamps keep it bright. Use your creative imagination flow and make the marvelous room for you and your guests to enjoy!

How to Protect Your Furniture During a Party

Christmas season usually means rushing around, big sales, shopping for the presents for friends and family members, and stressful preparations for parties and dinners. Still, Furniturecart team recommends to slow down and keep in mind what makes Christmas so magical – togetherness, tradition and people around. Bring everyone together for a fun party at your home and do not worry for the consequences. Create wonderful lasting memories for the little kids and get them involved in festive activities for you to both enjoy the holiday season. It only takes a few minutes prior to the event to ensure no unfortunate party ‘memorable gifts’ are found on your couch, dining room set or rug. Follow our simple advice and stay calm!It is fine if you want to protect your furniture and carpeting. And if you do care – cover what you want to be protected. It’s better to invest in a few inexpensive but nice area rugs and couch covers. Before the party begins, place the rugs in areas where the guests are expected. Protect your sofas, chairs or anything that’s upholstered with a decorative throw or fitted cover. It’s an investment keeping you safe from your beloved upholstered living room set replacement. Christmas-themed tablecloth on your gorgeous dining table will serve both protection and festive-mood booster for the guests.

Well before the party have your carpets and upholstered furniture properly cleaned. Psychologically, if the guests see your rugs are spotless and flawless, they’re more likely to remain thoughtful with their glass of red wine or punch. You might have removed extra furniture, accessories to the other rooms or you want to keep some rooms safe from kids, who might have use them when playing hide-and-seek. Establish “do not enter” areas. But leave enough space in the major room for the party and strolling around.

Provide few occasional tables and make sure the major table for the Christmas dinner is big enough to keep all your delicious festive meals. Cocktail and coffee tables are a good idea, as the absence of better options often forces guests to set their drink or plate on any available surface. Before the party, set up the tables in strategic places around, for instance close to your media console/television stand, couches or anywhere people gather. As the party slowly winds down, perform several walk-throughs to pick garbage and empty glasses. This approach has a double service as other than keeping your furniture and carpets spotless, it also makes the clean-up faster after your event is over. Undoubtedly, don’t forget to enjoy yourself during the festive event. Follow the simple protection rules, relax and enjoy the most wonderful holiday season!

  • apartment
  • studio
  • condo
  • or for those, who are desperate home décor & smart ideas fans

So, let’s start!

Multifunctionality first! Choose a storage ottoman or pieces with hidden storage for your living room, which will serve you double: it could both be used as a storage and a seating area/coffee or cocktail table. Convertible pieces of furniture, like a drop front desk, and space saving home office solutions are easily transformed from a storage space into a workspace.

Optimum! Find an optimal resolution with loveseat instead of bigger sofa, and upholstered bed or platform bed instead of sleigh or canopy bed. Find a balance of something that fits your small apartment but still offers ample free space around. Give up on ambitious style in favor of minimalistic contemporary style. It will take less of space and let your room be less visually overwhelmed. Small-scale table with an option to be transformed to a bigger one, when the guests are around, is a perfect dining room idea. Some of the storage tables offer even more smart ideas. You might definitely find kitchen islands, drop leaf furniture and home bars more than marvelous for a small space dining area in your home.

Don’t let the small space put limits on your right to have the same functionality.

Storage is the key! An abundance of shelves and drawers, as well as the storage furniture will help you keep the stuff you want to be displayed and hide the rest with no sacrificing the space. Bookcases with open shelving will keep the space open and airy. Moreover, let them function as a room divider in a studio or an open layout. Bookcase beds and storage beds, as well as the chests are a good way to save floor space and add extra space to keep the stuff.

Little tricks: light colors will undoubtedly create an open and airy look of any room. Don’t be afraid to play with the contrasts – paint the wall and choose the furniture fabric of a lighter color and add some bright and vivid accents in your room. Mirrors will do a good job making an illusion of a spacious room by reflecting light throughout the space.

And, one more thing worth mentioning: small space accommodations are more cozy and warmer in ambience. So, the only thing you have to do – is to make right decision while choosing the versatile furniture and use few of the useful tips Furniture Cart shared with you today! Stay creative!
